Here are some common mistakes that new online poker players make (hopefully sparing you the same fate!)
  • They play stakes that are too high.
Always play within your bankroll - if you can't really afford to sit at a particualr table, you won't have enough to get past the swings.
  • They underestimate their opponents.
Winning that Friday night game most weekends with your neighbors is one thing, playing online is another. Learn your new opponents.
  • They just keep fishing for hands.
Especially when they're used to playing smaller games. Most tables online accomodate 10 players - so if you're used to a smaller number of opponents, you'll need to get used to waiting longer for good starting hands.
  • Play drunk or even slightly buzzed.
It might be easier to feed your bad habits at home in front of the computer - but it won't help your game any.

Best of luck at the tables. If this is your first time playing online, then you should start off at lower limits or even free play, until you get a good feel of the games and software.
